- Cart operators shall abide by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute tobacco, alcohol and drug policy and never operate a cart smoking or under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
- Carts must be operated with the utmost courtesy, care, and consideration for the staff and convenience of other vehicles and pedestrians. In congested pedestrian areas, operators must either part or reduce speed to a pace consistent with pedestrians. Pedestrians must be afforded the right-of-way at all times. This includes persons walking, jogging, bicycling and those in wheelchairs or mobility-assist devices.
- Carts must be inspected before each use; a pre-trip inspection of brakes, steering, horn, back-up alarm, tire and inflation, and battery shall be conducted. Inoperable equipment identified must be repaired before operating the cart.
- Equipment problems or any other cart (for RPI-owned carts) related problems shall be reported to Physical Plant via FIXX request at fixx@rpi.edu
- All occupants in the cart shall keep hands, legs, and feet within the confines of the cart while it is in motion. The driver of the cart is responsible to inform occupants.
- The maximum speed shall not exceed 15 mph.
- While driving carts through parking lots, special care must be taken to observe traffic and vehicles pulling in/out parking spaces.
- Cart operators are not permitted to not wear headphones, use cell phones or use/operator any other device while driving that may cause a distraction, including text messaging.
- Carts shall not be modified in any manner that affects the mode of operation, speed or safety of the vehicle.
- Do not exceed the passenger limit, seating designation or car capacity as designated by the cart’s manufacturer.
- If cart(s) is not equipped with turn indicators the driver shall use appropriate hand signals.
- Items being transported must be placed in the rear box and/or properly secured. Neither cargo nor passenger shall be placed on the roof of the cart.

All accidents involving carts should be immediately reported to Public Safety by calling their main offices to (518) 276-6656.
